Biodivergent Sites & Sounds is an autoethnographic investigation of place, of waterways and of autism as a cultural identity.

About this event

Magical Women presents…

We are always told that encountering nature and preserving the environment is important. But what if you experience access barriers and being out in nature is much harder for you?

Biodivergent Sites & Sounds is an autoethnographic investigation of place, of waterways and of autism as a cultural identity. An autistic-led immersive and accessible experience for audiences to experience nature and to engage in the preservation of Harlesden Canal using creative technology.

The project has been created by multi-disciplinary artist Elinor Rowlands in collaboration with the Canal & River Trust (and its many volunteers); fellow neurodivergent artists Jo-anne Cox, Dee Fry, R.Dyer and Ben Hajioff; young people from Harlesden Primary School and Sport at the Heart; and creative technologist Charles Matthews.

Join us at this very special event at the Grand Union Community Hub in Wembley on Friday 17 November (5pm – 7pm) as we launch the Biodivergent Sites & Sounds scenographic sensory soundscapes and interactive map.

An examination of autistic stimming as an act of power, self-expression and creativity. A connection at the water’s edge.

The event will include musical performances by Jo-anne Cox, R.Dyer, Dee Fry and Elinor Rowlands, poetry by Sofia Lyall, and opportunities for you to be among the first to experience the Biodivergent Sites & Sounds soundscapes.

The event will be held in a fully accessible venue and will be BSL interpreted.

Drinks will be served.

Biodivergent Sites & Sounds has been kindly funded by Arts Council England and the Canal & River Trust, with support from Cole’s Gallery and Creative Health Camden.

An evening of spooky storytelling, cosmic and haunting music and poetry performances!

About this event

Magical Women presents…

An evening of spooky storytelling, cosmic and haunting music and poetry performances!

We have a really exciting line-up of featured artists:

Supporting/opening act is Lauren Alex Hooper who is an autistic songwriter and will be sharing two new songs.

Artist, podcaster, folklorist, and paranormal historian Bethan Briggs-Miller invites you to enjoy some spooky storytelling of the season!

Live music – Introducing R.Dyer, an autistic musician, who uses saxophone, saw, harp, found sounds, tape samples, looped vocals and synth to create mesmerising baroque pop laced with chaotic improvisation to create the most incredible and wonderful tracks. Sometimes they stray into power pop.

Then we have cosmic and daring poetry from our Feature Poet Wendy Young. As for many London adoptees, Wendy Young’s life is delineated by the before and after of arrival in the great metropolis. Evocative aromas of the nearby canal (preferably the murky bits), walking in graveyards, music, excessive cookery programmes, smoking, Hammer Horror and life’s horrors.

We also invite artists, writers, poets and musicians who identify as women and/or non-binary folk to share their offerings in an autistic/ADHD-led, relaxed and spooky environment. If you want to perform please email us for a slot! info@magicalwomen.co.uk

Please note: This is an online event!

Autistic/ADHD artist Elinor Rowlands will host this spooky event alongside their body double/access support, illustrator, Brigette Wellbelove, to celebrate Samhain, which according to folkloric literature marks the beginning of the “darker half of the year”, between the fall equinox and the winter solstice, with festivities lasting for three days. This day was brought about to honour the dead as they passed from the human realm into the spirit world, and was marked in a number of ways.

If you’re interested in performing during the evening please email info@magicalwomen.co.uk so your name can be added to the list of performers. We will notify all performers at the beginning of the event whether they can have 3mins or 6mins to share a tune or 2, poetry, or their writing. (This depends on numbers!)

We accept all types of music and writing, we do not censor work but we do ask that you be mindful of the diversity of the group and lived experience.
